THE FOR THE PEOPLE ACT

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Students Against Voter Suppression supports the U.S. Senate’s decision to introduce S. 1, the For the People Act

[WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17TH, 2021] On March 19th, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Rules Committee Chairwoman Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) will introduce S. 1, the For the People Act, in the U.S. Senate. Students Against Voter Suppression officially supports the introduction of this democracy reform package as it will expand and protect the freedom to vote, end partisan and racial gerrymandering, and restore transparency and accountability in our government.

Since the 2020 election, 43 states have already introduced, prefiled, or carried more than 250 bills to restrict or limit voting access this year, intentionally aiming to drown out the voices of voters. The For the People Act will transform our politics towards the true promise of democracy—a multiracial, inclusive government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Students Against Voter Suppression officially recognizes that the Senate must swiftly pass and President Biden must sign into law these bold and common-sense reforms to build a more just, fair, and inclusive democratic society.

SUMMARY

The For the People Act is a multifaceted bill sponsored by Rep. John P. Sarbanes addressing voting rights, campaign finance, redistricting, government transparency, and ethics. HR 1 would also help to restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which implemented federal oversight in states that have a history of racial discrimination in voting. Specifically, the bill expands voter registration and voting access and limits removing voters from voter rolls. HR 1 passed the House of Representatives in March 2021 by a vote of 234-193 but has been stuck in the Senate due to backlash from Republican senators, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who refuses to discuss the bill. Now with a Democratic trifecta, its chances of passing and being signed into law are much better. SAVS is currently mobilizing digitally, networking with press, and coordinating with relevant government officials on behalf of this bill.
